Honorees
The NYC Fire Museum proudly honors Michael Barasch and the NYCHA Fire Safety Training Group for their unwavering dedication to protecting and serving the NYC community—Michael through his tireless advocacy for 9/11 victims and the Training Group through their crucial work in fire prevention education across public housing, both exemplifying the Museum's mission to preserve and share the story of fire fighting history while promoting public safety education.
NYCHA Fire Safety Training Group
The NYCHA Fire Safety Training Group is a collaborative initiative dedicated to enhancing fire safety education and prevention across New York City's public housing communities. Comprised of key stakeholders from the FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation, FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit, NYCHA Fire Safety Department, and the Public Housing Community Fund, the group works to address critical fire safety challenges, particularly in underserved neighborhoods. The group's efforts include delivering targeted training programs, conducting community outreach, and raising awareness about emerging fire risks, such as the dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries. Through its proactive approach, the NYCHA Fire Safety Training Group empowers residents with the knowledge and resources needed to prevent fires and respond effectively in emergencies, safeguarding the lives and well-being of thousands of New Yorkers.
Michael Barasch
In the wake of the devastating September 11th terrorist attacks, countless first responders, downtown Manhattan residents, workers, students, and teachers were exposed to hazardous toxins, leading to severe health challenges that persist today. Michael Barasch and Barasch & McGarry have been instrumental in fighting for the 9/11 community's rights, beginning with their representation of NYPD Detective James Zadroga, whose tragic death led to the initial 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. Through tireless advocacy alongside first responders, Jon Stewart, and the FealGood Foundation, Michael helped secure the permanent extension and full funding of the Victim Compensation Fund in 2019, culminating in the historic "Never Forget the Heroes Act." Today, Barasch & McGarry represents nearly 50,000 individuals affected by 9/11 toxins and has recovered over $3 billion from the Victim Compensation Fund—more than any other law firm in the country—continuing their committed service to those whose lives were forever changed by the events of 9/11.
