Annual Appeal

Donate Now

As 2023 comes to a close, please consider supporting the New York City Fire Museum

during our 2023 Annual Appeal, active now through January 5, 2024.

The Museum’s mission is to preserve, educate and celebrate, honoring the history and modern-day heroism of the greatest fire department in the world, the FDNY. Now celebrating 36 years at 278 Spring Street, FDNY history comes alive here through two permanent exhibition floors displaying the history of NY fire service with countless fascinating artifacts that document the history of the volunteer and paid departments, from painted leather buckets to early motorized apparatus. Our exhibit floors take visitors back centuries to the earliest days of firefighting during the Colonial Era. We also house a permanent memorial room dedicated to the 343 heroes who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

This year, the Museum displayed temporary exhibitions including the work of award-winning photographers Jill Freedman (“Firehouse: The Photography of Jill Freedman”); an historical spotlight on FDNY bands (“Strike Up the Band: A Tribute to the Bands of the Bravest”); a special display for the September 11th anniversary month (Recovery and Reflection: Celebrating the 9/11 Tribute Museum); a journey through probationary firefighter training (“Becoming the Bravest”); and a soon-to-be permanent exhibition highlighting Colonial Firefighting and the Great NY Fire of 1776. We are also proud to present a monthly podcast “Throwback FDNY” for listeners near and far to learn about FDNY history.

The Museum is a place of life-saving learning, hosting thousands of children from school and camp groups throughout the year to learn about fire and life safety from members of the FDNY’s Fire Safety Education Unit. Last, but certainly not least, we host numerous community and special events, ranging from exhibit openings to the Annual Golf Outing to family-friendly events such as the popular Santa Rescue. We are planning a full calendar of exhibitions and events in 2024 and hope to see you!
